Weekend Concert Calendar, 2/5/09

I heard a rumor that it's actually supposed to be fairly nice this weekend, so you should take advantage of the weather to get out and hear some concerts!

First off, you should come hear me sing with Schola Cantorum on Friday. We'll be doing a program centered around the Renaissance composer Ockeghem. Josquin des Pres wrote a motet upon Ockeghem's death called "Nymphes des Bois" and in it he lists a number of composers that he calls "the sons of Ockeghem." So this concert will feature a piece by every one of those composers that Josquin lists (including Josquin himself) and the second half of the concert we'll sing first "Nymphes des Bois" and then Ockeghem's Requiem. And, most appropriately, tomorrow will be the anniversary of Ockeghem's death! We'll be singing this program tomorrow at St. John's at 35 Bowdoin St. in Boston at 8 pm, and on Saturday at St. Joseph's at 88 Hope St. in Providence, RI, also at 8 pm.

Friday:

Schola Cantorum will perform at 8:00 pm at St. John's Church at 35 Bowdoin St. in Boston. We will sing a concert featuring Ockeghem's Requiem. This program will be repeated on Saturday night in Rhode Island.

Saturday:

The Cantata Singers will perform at 2:00 pm at All Saints Parish, 1773 Beacon St., Brookline. They will be presenting a staged performance of Benjamin Britten's musical pagaent Noye's Fludde. Chances to see this excellent piece are few and far between because of the forces involved, so I suggest you check it out!

Calliope will perform at 7:30 pm at Old West Church, 131 Cambridge St., Boston. This is a benefit concert for the St. Francis House of Boston.

Schola Cantorum will perform at 8:00 pm at St. Joseph's Church at 88 Hope St. in Providence, RI. We will sing a concert featuring Ockeghem's Requiem.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo will be at Sanders Theater at 8 pm. But...it's sold out.

This is not strictly choral, but soprano Dominique Labelle and countertenor Michael Chance will perform music of Handel Purcell, and Pergolesi's Stabat Mater with the Sarasa Chamber Music Ensemble. This will be Saturday at 8:00 pm at the First Congregational Church, 11 Garden St., Cambridge. Brought to you by BEMF.
